The Science of God and Why We Believe
by Steve Schappert
Flowing robes and walking on clouds: Probably not, but is it possible that there is a power in the universe so much more powerful than us that we can’t quite comprehend it? A rational person would have to agree that we are not the center of the universe. In a universe larger than we can even comprehend, there must be other life forms (energy forms) and it makes sense that there is something that keeps it all in balance. Call it God, Allah or if you are slightly more sci-fi, call it the force. Regardless of what you call it, it is reasonable to believe and understand that there is more, and as a species we are truly babes in the wood. The history of our entire planet is barely a footnote in the history of the universe.
Ok, so back to the flowing robes and such, can you understand that when the many religious scriptures were first written people thought that the world was flat, we knew nothing about mysterious forces, such as electricity, so stories were written that people could understand. Over the years there have been translations and interpretations and well, stories change slightly when that happens. Did you ever play that game as a kid where you whisper in the ear of the person next to you, they then tell the next person and so on, give it 5 minutes and see what happens to the story, and then imagine what could happen over 2000 years.
Jesus: Personally I believe that a man named Jesus existed approximately 2000 years ago. Ok I will go a step further and say that a being in the form of a man existed and most of history calls him Jesus. I happen to think Jesus was an amazing person and left a mark on this world that we could all aspire to, “treat your neighbor as yourself”, sounds pretty simple unfortunately over the years it has occasionally gotten got twisted to,” repent sinner or we will kill you”. I’m not really a fan of that concept, we are all different, we all interpret things differently, but if we examine the real core of what we believe we are all very similar. A peaceful happy life where people accept each other for who they are and treat each other with respect and kindness. This would be good, Yes? Ok I’m digressing slightly, but that happens when contemplating such deep concepts, so bear with me.
The Holy Spirit: If you have a problem with the overall concept of spirits and the after life, try and break it down. Be the science guy for a moment, energy never dies. Energy simply transfers from one state to another. What is at the core of all existence? Energy! What brings a body to life? Don’t tell me blood pumping through the veins, what made the blood pump? Simply stated, it’s energy and when our bodies wear out, where does that energy go? Again, let’s keep it simple and agree it goes somewhere else, because all energy goes somewhere. Energy flows through our bodies, it pulses through our nerves and it makes us who we are. You can follow the causes back further and further and at some point you will reach a point that you can’t explain, what do you call that?
Immaculate Conception: Well again consider it was written 2000 years ago and think of what you now know. Can we produce a baby without a man and woman having sex? Absolutely! So how hard is it to believe that in an ever expanding universe a higher life form visited us? If we weren’t so young we would be out there doing exactly that. Now would it be so totally ridiculous to think that if a higher being visited, that a child could be conceived? I am not trying to disrespect anyone’s belief with the analogy simply trying to break it down to simple terms.
Conclusion: We are all dummies, not judging or pointing fingers at anyone. I believe in GOD but if you have a different name for her, I am OK with that. : ) I simply hope we can agree that good is better than the opposite. We think we are all evolved and know everything, but the real test of knowledge is whether you understand that as much as you know, in the grand scheme of things we don’t know anything. We know that there are atoms, molecules, and people. Atoms are to people as people are to______________ fill in the blank with whatever term you like, all I suggest is that there is more and it is quite possibly beyond our current understanding. It doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
Why do we believe what we believe? Our understanding of life is based on our belief system, they can help or hurt us, as we are driven to find purpose in our lives. Our brains have the power to conjure up a system of beliefs that shape our morals, ethics, heal our bodies and minds, and create deep spiritual connections and relationships. Unfortunately we also have a need to impose our beliefs on others…
Believing in something, anything, helps guide us, in our lives. There is good and evil in the world and we become what we think about most, I choose GOOD and I hope you are well, do good things and live your life in peace.

The above ramblings are simply my thoughts on the subject and I look forward to hearing your thoughts. The article is just as much about learning as it is about teaching. Please leave a response and let us know how you feel, next week we’ll discuss politics. -Steve Schappert

I like this article very much.
Be kind & respectful to yourself and others and the world works – what a concept.
Is it really critical that we all have to agree on the details?
Thanks Becky!
