What is Gangnam?

Apparently Gangnam is the largest word ever, in the universal language of music. If you’re an old guy like me (48) you are probably wondering what the heck this Gangnam stuff is about. Apparently there is a wildly popular video with over a billion views on YouTube,  yup, I said BILLION with a capital “B”! The first video ever to reach that number and apparently it happened in a very short amount of time, hovering over 1.1 billion after 5 months.  I can’t say it’s my style but getting a billion people to like anything is quite an accomplishment.  I would give the video a pg 13 rating it has pretty girls in tight shorts just like the NFL and sexual innuendo.  It has simple lyrics which makes it easy for a vast # of people to sing along and it has a simple beat making it easy to dance to.  By most music standards it is total crap, but that is my opinion lol!  I do have to give them credit for following a simple formula that is missed by most…KISS Keep It Simple Stupid, but I think we will change the formula slightly to “keep it simple and stupid”.  Don’t get me wrong, their formula is pure genius in its simplicity whether you like the song or not.  Give it a click , judge for yourself and leave a comment below.

“Last month we brought you news that the viral video for Psy’s “Gangnam Style” had supplanted Justin Bieber‘s “Baby” as the most-viewed clip of all time on YouTube.

Was that enough for the South Korean pop star, who just bought a condo in L.A.’s Blair House? Hardly: On Friday Psy’s horse-dancing spectacle became the first YouTube video to reach 1 billion views – an astonishing number he’d already left in the dust by Saturday afternoon, at which point “Gangnam Style” had been seen an additional 17 million times.

That puts the video (which you can watch below) more than 200 million views ahead of “Baby.”

“We just set out to try and make some history, break down barriers and prove a song in Korean could go all the way,” said School Boy Records chief Scooter Braun in a statement. (Braun, who also manages Bieber’s career, took on Psy as a client earlier this year.) “This is a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to music being the universal language.”

Added Psy, who’s set to perform on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” later this month, “I didn’t even imagine ‘Gangnam Style’ would get 1 million views, let alone 1 billion views!”   He’s surely not the only one.”

via Urban Dictionary  “Gangnam Style” is a new Korean phrase used to describe upscale fashion and decadent lifestyle associated with the trendy population in Seoul’s Gangnam district (강남), which is considered the most affluent part of the metropolitan area.

“Gangnam” means “south(nam) of the river(gang)” in Korean. In this song, the “river(gang)” is the Han River, which penetrates the City of Seoul, capital of South Korea. The northern part of Seoul(gangbuk) has been the capital of Korea since the early 15th century. Development of Gangnam and expansion of Seoul started in 1970s. Gangnam is the icon of the rapid economic development of South Korea in 1970s and 80s. Mostly benefited from skyrocketing real estate price followed by planned economic development, Gangnam has become the most wealthy area in the entire South Korea. “Gangnam” is being regarded as the place where people are rich, girls are pretty and everything is supposed to be cool.”

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia  “Gangnam District (Gangnam-gu, 강남구; 江南區) is one of the 25 gu (local government districts) which make up the city of Seoul, South Korea. Gangnam (강남; 江南 Korean pronunciation: [kaŋnam]) is literally “South of the (Han) River”. As of the 2010 census, Gangnam District had a population of 527,641,[1] making it the 4th most populated district in Seoul. Gangnam District is the third largest district in Seoul with an area of 39.5 km2.

Until the early 1980s Gangnam and its neighboring areas had remained the least developed in Seoul, but prodigious development over the last 30 years has earned it a reputation for being one of the most affluent, dynamic, and influential areas in both Seoul and South Korea as a whole.[2]”
