PUMA Presents “peace starts with me” Films  AUGUST, 2011

PUMA is proud to present the works of 7 international filmmakers as open content to be shown at the World Peace Festival 2011.

“peace starts with me” is a new annual PUMA.Peace commission. This year seven international artists and filmmakers create original works. Curated by PUMA.Creative Chief Curator, Mark Coetzee, and produced by Shooting People, these films encompass a diverse range of styles; including 35mm live action, experimental animation and fine art. Conceived as 30 to 90 second films to facilitate online as well as live screenings, the works are based on the idea that “peace starts with me”. PUMA.Peace commissioned these films under an agreement with the artists that they can openly be downloaded and shown, without any fees, thus acting as ongoing tools for peace—for all. The filmmakers range from world-renowned award-winning artists, to recent graduates; all were selected for the quality and scope of their work and their sensitivity in interpreting this year’s theme.

“The goal of our PUMA.Peace initiative is to create programs that foster a more peaceful world than the one we live in today,” said Jochen Zeitz CEO of the Sport & Lifestyle Group, PPR, Paris, France. “Each of us can make a difference in this world as individuals, as corporations and through strategic partnerships. Moreover, at PUMA we feel that we are uniquely positioned to contribute to making the world a better place for generations to come.”

Magali Charrier

Magali Charrier is an experimental filmmaker and animator and a gruadate from the Royal College of Art in 2010. She juxtaposes live action and animation to investigate the moving body and its failings.

“Peace starts with me. Here. My body.
Through fragmentation and dislocation, this film
explores the body as a place where inner conflicts
and tensions are played out. A frenetic collage
gives way to a more serene version of the body.
Peace comes as a sudden breath born out of chaos.”

Tom Gran and Kayleigh Gibbons

Tom Gran and Kayleigh Gibbons graduated from the University of the West of England in 2010. Their first film Scunner premiered at Encounters Film Festival and was screened throughout the world. This is their second project together.

“For us, peace is about letting go. We all have the
potential to destroy each other and our resistance
to letting go of our defenses makes confl ict
much more dangerous. Our film follows a society
of living threads as they desperately support
hundreds of bladed objects in mid-air.”

Max Hattler

Educated at Goldsmiths and the Royal College of Art, Hattler has made over 20 moving image works and has shown at exhibitions and film festivals worldwide, winning many awards.

“My film is about mirroring and feedback—
abstract patterns and shapes fill the two sides
of the screen, taking us on a journey from
disharmony to peace. Conceptually, it’s about how
violence breeds violence and love breeds love. Only
by turning the other cheek can we bring about
change, understanding and peace.”

Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor

Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor studied theatre at Dartington College of Arts. Over the years their films have screened extensively around the world including screenings at Telluride, Rotterdam, London, Sydney, Thessaloniki, Edinburgh, Hong Kong, Singapore, Pusan, Durban and Morelia.

“Our film is a portrait of a community, united in a
celebration of peace. What starts as one individual
ends in a large and spectacular group portrait,
with people from all backgrounds standing
together and sharing a moment of tranquility.
Peace starts with me and gradually expands to
include everyone. We are all connected.”

Noriko Okaku

Japanese-born Noriko Okaku studied at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, and the Royal College of Art. Her art ranges from audiovisual work, to performance and experimental animation. She has had solo exhibitions in galleries in Japan and Europe.

“Peace is always in your life, if you look for it. In
my film, the word peace is concealed within an
abstract landscape—at times clearly discernible, at
others hidden. The film is meant to seem chaotic.
Like the principles of Yin and Yang, positive and
negative, peace exists within chaos and vice versa.”

Jacco Olivier

Jacco Olivier lives and works in Amsterdam, where he studied at the Rijksakademie. He is represented by the Victoria Miro Gallery in London; the Marianne Boesky gallery in New York; the Thomas Schulte Gallery in Berlin, and Ron Mandos Gallery in Amsterdam. His work has been exhibited extensively worldwide since 2003.

“My film is an abstract visualization of the feelings
and imagery that haunt me in the transitional
space between sleep and wakefulness. I am a slow
starter—every morning, before I can approach the
world worry-free and open-minded, I need to first
drain the negative. Only then am I happy and at
peace with myself.”

Bill Porter

Bill Porter grew up on the isolated, wind-swept coast of North Cornwall. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art, in 2008, he now works as an animator/director in London and has screened at various animation festivals and galleries around the world.

“Two fighters face one another in the ring, surrounded
by spectators in masquerade. The bell sounds and the
fighters jump into action. The spectators become more
and more frenzied as the blows get harder and the
fighters less guarded. Finally they peak and, exhausted,
slump into one another—a moment of peace.”

PUMA’s involvement in the Young One World summit, through three exceptional PUMA employees, continues our commitment to bringing about a more peaceful, creative and sustainable world.

One Young World, the most important forum for the leaders of tomorrow, aims to show that we all share a common humanity. It connects and brings together the youngest, brightest and best and to ensure their concerns, opinions and solutions are heard. PUMA representatives will be there, all expenses paid, courtesy of PUMAVision.

Impressive applications came in from around the world. We thank all of you who took part. We congratulate Adeline Perez from EMEA, Cash Ryan from APAC and Rocío González Vázquez from the Americas, who are this year’s winners. Each demonstrated a rigorous commitment to the 4Keys of being Fair, Honest, Positive and Creative and found interesting ways to promote sustainability.

On December 1, 2010, PUMA received the Award for the Best Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiative at the prestigious Peace and Sport Awards 2010 for its PUMA.Peace program and multilayered campaigns to support global peace. The awards ceremony was part of the 4th annual Peace and Sport International Forum in Monaco. HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and Joel Bouzou, President and Founder of the organization, paid tribute to achievements that best embody the role of sport to promote dialogue and build bridges between divided communities. Six awards were given to recognize people and initiatives in sport, which made key contributions to social stability in the world during the previous year, at a gala event on December 1 for over 500 distinguished guests from the world of politics, sports, the private sector and civil society.

PUMA works towards a better world for generations to come through the PUMAVision platform. Through the initiatives of PUMA.Peace, PUMA is providing real and practical expressions of this vision by strategically implementing long-term partnerships, creating initiatives and raising global awareness for these projects. PUMA.Peace works to inspire and educate individuals around the globe that peace is possible and utilizes sport as a vehicle to achieve this goal.

PUMA continues to raise awareness for the United Nations International Day of Peace; an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on September 21, and partners with the non-profit organization that inspired the days creation, Peace One Day. In 2008, PUMA.Peace and Peace One Day launched One Day One Goal, a global football movement that celebrates Peace Day with goodwill matches played around the world, and in many cases between communities previously in conflict. In 2010, over 3,000 One Day One Goal commemorative football matches were played around the globe on or around Peace Day in every UN Member State.

PUMA.Peace initiated a symbolic truce with adidas in 2009, after a 6-decade rivalry started by the companies founding brothers, as a commitment to Peace Day and to establish a new legacy of peace between the companies. The companies played a mixed One Day One Goal football match between employees, including CEOs Jochen Zeitz and Herbert Hainer, and in 2010 the town of Herzogenaurach where the companies are headquartered also joined in and put aside its history of conflict to play for the “Peace One Day Cup”.

In 2010, PUMA launched a long term partnership to champion independent documentary films, with Channel 4 BRITDOC Foundation. Through the establishment of the PUMA.Creative Documentary Fund, the company will dedicate financial support, creative counsel and industry recognition to international documentary filmmakers, whose creative storytelling highlights social justice, peace and environmental issues.

PUMA.Peace will continue to develop initiatives that promote and support peace across the globe. In addition to PUMA’s Award for the Best Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiative, five other Peace and Sport Awards were distributed last night including: the Grand Prix for the Peace and Sport Image of the Year, the Award for Best Peace Project from an International Sports Federation, the Award for the Sports Event for Peace of the Year, and the Award for the Sports Non-Governmental Organization of the Year. Winners were selected by a jury composed of eminent figures, invested at the highest level in activities for the promotion of peace through sport.

In the spirit of Peace One Day, London’s Tottenham Court Road Office hosted a fun-packed after-work party with our friends from Adidas on September 21st.

Capturing the spirit of Puma JOY, a party took place on the newly renevated 4th floor lounge & reception areas, with various games – such as ping pong, foozball, and pool. Mixed Puma & Adidas teams in were decked out in One Day One Goal t-shirts and created a fun and festive atmosphere.

Our Adidas friends were enthusiastic and fantastic company, joining in on all games and festivities.  People had such a good time that the festivities carried well beyond the expected time with the Adidasians staying right until the end!

Peace One Day’s One Day One Goal, supported by PUMA.Peace, is a monumental campaign to encourage goodwill football matches globally on Peace Day; a day of global ceasefire and non-violence. Through the One Day One Goal campaign, PUMA.Peace and Peace One Day bring together communities and individuals from all walks of life to help build relationships and promote inter-cultural cooperation and respect.

Children in South Africa celebrate Peace Day

This year, over 3,000 friendly matches were played, including matches in every UN member state. In addition to the regular Peace Day games, 21 One Day One Goal Unity Matches also transpired, supporting peace building efforts and strengthening a fragile peace in many regions. The unity matches included a game played in the formerly war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo, an inter-ethnic match in Ghana, and a high profile game at the national stadium in Haiti.

One Day One Goal Match held at the stadium Lumumba of Matadi, DR Congo between two teams of young women. The match was played under the patronage and collaboration of both provincial Ministries of Justice, Human Rights, Public Health and Social Affairs and Youth, Leisure, Sports, Culture and Arts

To help support key One Day One Goal goodwill matches, PUMA.Peace provided PUMA fair trade One Day One Goal footballs and PUMA One Day One Goal T-shirts using ‘Cotton Made in Africa’ (supporting subsistence farmers in Africa).

The Youth Development Program in Kingston, Jamaica organized a One Day One Goal Match. The program works with boys between the ages of 12-15 who have dropped out of the school system and helps them catch up and reintegrate themselves. The team captains are pictured above.

“The goal of our PUMA.Peace program is to contribute to a more peaceful world than the world we know today,”  said Jochen Zeitz, Chairman and CEO of PUMA. “The One Day One Goal campaign uses the power of sport to cut across geography, ethnicities and politics and supports the peace process as part of our vision, our PUMAVision. This year over 3000 One Day One Goal goodwill matches are taking place on Peace Day — an incredible demonstration of the power and common language of football and peace combined in action.”

A soccer tournament was held between September 17-21 in a camp of 50,000 refugees in ‘Jalozai’ near the city of Peshwar in Pakistan. A total of 300 kids took part in the tournament.

Following last year’s historic handshake between Adidas and PUMA, a PEACE ONE DAY Tournament was held in Herzogenaurach on World Peace Day

Last year, news of the historic handshake between Adidas and PUMA made it round the world. To celebrate Peace Day, the global day of cease fire and non-violence, a special One Day One Goal tournament was held in Herzogenaurach, Germany, the home town of the two companies.

A total of 192 adults and children took part in the PEACE ONE DAY CUP 2010 – playing in mixed teams including Adidas and PUMA employees, representatives from the town administration, local churches, and teachers and pupils from Herzogenaurach’s four schools. Each team was named after Nobel Prize winners or the word for ‘peace’ in different languages.

Team Taika (‘peace’ in Lithuanian) became the schools’ Peace One Day Champion by defeating Vrede ( ‘peace’ in Afrikaans) by 2:1 in the final. In the adult final, Team Willy Brandt won 2:0 against Team Al Gore. The CEOs of adidas and PUMA, Herbert Hainer and Jochen Zeitz, together with football player Javier Pinola, presented the winners with the Peace One Day Trophy as well as tickets for the Bundesliga match between 1st FC Nuremberg against VfB Stuttgart in the easyCredit stadium on September 22.

“Following last year’s historic handshake between adidas and PUMA, we are extremely pleased that our joint initiative in support of One Day One Goal and Peace Day was supported by the city of Herzogenaurach for the first time this year,” stated Jochen Zeitz, CEO of PUMA AG. “Together with the schools and various organizations in Herzogenaurach, we spread the message of a peaceful and community-based gathering at the Peace One Day Cup 2010 far beyond the city limits and, in doing so, hope to make a positive contribution to peace.”

“The World Cup in South Africa spectacularly showed that football fans from all nations and religions and of all ages and genders can peacefully join together in their celebrations. Sport has the power to bring people together and overcome barriers”, stated Herbert Hainer, CEO of Adidas AG. “Here at adidas, we were pleased to join PUMA and the city of Herzogenaurach to once again support the PEACE ONE DAY initiative this year.”

Through this event, adidas, PUMA and Herzogenaurach supported Peace Day together for the first time to unite people through the power of sports and promote the urgent need for a peaceful co-existence.

PUMA.Peace is the sole supporter of the Peace One Day, One Day One Goal campaign to encourages football matches around the world on September 21st – the international day of cease fire known as Peace Day. The goal of ODOG is to harness the power of the beautiful game to encourage peace and cooperation. Sport has the ability to cut across all geographic, ethnicities and politics and enable greater understanding and respect. Many of these football matches strengthen and support peace building efforts in regions previously in conflict.

Jimmy Jean-Louis was proud to announce that over 3,000 soccer matches were held in honor of this year’s Peace Day, with games in all 192 UN member states. A game that was of special importance to Jimmy Jean-Louis was the match played in his native Haiti. His excitement was contagious and the crowd clammered for the soccer balls he threw into the crowd to support ODOG.

On September 21, Peace One Day will be hosting a concert at Le Zenith in Paris that will be webcast for the entire world to see. The concert will be hosted by Jude Law and Sharon Stone and will feature a variety of acts including Charlie Winston, Patti Smith, -M-, Youssou Ndour, Ayo, and Vanessa Paradis. PUMA.Peace became a key partner with Peace One Day in 2007 to support Peace One Day’s mission to raise awareness for Peace Day—21 September annually—a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence. In 2008 PUMA.Peace and Peace One Day launched the initiative ONE DAY ONE GOAL to encourage goodwill football matches all over the world on Peace Day.

Jimmy Jean-Louis is an actor and humanitarian best known for his role as “The Haitian” on the popular television show “Heroes”. Born and raised in Haiti, Jimmy Jean-Louis founded the non-profit organizationHollywood Unites for Haiti (HUFH) in 2008 to provide cultural and sports opportunities for the underprivileged youth of Haiti.

On September 6, he participated in a press conferece for the upcoming Peace One Day concert, which will be held on September 17 in Le Zenith, Paris. Other speakers at the press conference included Peace One Day founder Jeremy Gilley, singer Patti Smith, Lenny Kaye and British singer Charlie Winston.

PUMA through its puma.peace initiative has been a proud partner of the non-profit organization Peace One Day since 2007. Established by filmmaker Jeremy Gilley, Peace One Day began as a film project to document the creation of the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence. In 2001, as a result of these efforts, member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted the first ever day of global ceasefire and non-violence on September 21st – Peace Day. In 2007, the UN announced that 100 million people worldwide were engaged in Peace Day activities. Peace One Day’s objective now is to institutionalize Peace Day throughout the world, making it a day that is self-sustaining. Their medium-term goal is to reach 3 billion people with the message of Peace Day by September 21st, 2012…but they can’t do it alone.

PUMA’s partnership with Peace One Day is rooted in our shared values of inclusiveness, leadership, passion and willingness to push boundaries. Together we launched One Day One Goal, a campaign to see football/soccer matches played in every country on Peace Day. 2009 saw over 700 matches in 200 countries.
