To have played games as colonial children did? To have made toys and books? To have prepared food as a colonial family?

Come spend five mornings with us and find out!

Children will experience activities reminiscent of life in the 1800s, including craft projects, games, butter making, a visit inside Plumtrees School House to learn what school was like and much more. Come dressed for colonial times! Snacks and supplies included in fees. Please bring a bagged lunch

Rep. Scribner Plays Pivotal Role in Securing Bond for Ann’s Place

The following is a press release sent in by the Press Secretary for State Re. David Scribner–

HARTFORD—State Representative David A. Scribner (R-107) is cheering a $250,000 State Bond for cancer support center Ann’s Place, the Home of I CAN, in Danbury.

Rep. Scribner, along with Rep. Giegler, requested the bond to help pay for the remaining cost of a new, 17,000-square-foot headquarters for Ann’s Place, which will greatly enhance the level of service they provide. The vast majority of the $5 million project has been previously funded by donors, and much of the labor and materials have also been donated.

Ann’s Place has provided comfort and support to people living with cancer and to their families for over 20 years. The organization provides support groups, mentor programs, financial assistance, supply loans, therapeutic counseling, wellness programs and educational resources for patients and their families.

“Ann’s Place is an amazing organization that helps make life easier on cancer patients and their families at a time when assistance is desperately needed and greatly appreciated. The physical and emotional tolls that diagnosis, treatment and recovery takes on them can be devastating. This bond will allow Ann’s Place to finalize what is a unique and priceless facility that helps folks with everything from counseling to wheelchair loans.” Rep. Scribner said.

Currently, Ann’s Place is not collecting any federal or state funding, but has instead only accepted private donations.

Rep. Scribner added “I would like to thank the Bond Commission for validating the great service Ann’s Place provides to our community, and slating this important bond for approval.”

A strong advocate and leader for health issues, Rep. Scribner serves on the Public Health Committee, and also on Finance, Revenue, & Bonding where he serves on General Bonding and as ex-officio member of the State Bond Commission. Locally he also serves on the Board of Directors of the Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut.

Rep. Scribner, along with other members of the delegation, have written many letters of support spanning over three years to lobby the state for this much needed bond. He has also played a major role in working in cooperation with Ann’s Place leadership in order to make sure that their legislative needs are met and to help increase awareness. Rep. Scribner has toured the facility multiple times and has lent his support to many of their community events.

The Greater Danbury Delegation, led by Reps. Giegler and Scribner, has pledged their support for the approval of this bond. The lawmakers that have helped petition for this bond include Reps. Dan Carter, John Frey, Bob Godfrey, DebraLee Hovey, Christopher Lyddy, David Scribner, Richard Smith and Joseph Taborsak.

Ann’s Place, “The Home of I CAN,” was co-founded in 1991 by Pat Bragdon and Mary Burke. The new facility serves 700 people a month from over 14 Connecticut towns, and is located at 80 Saw Mill Road, Danbury.  For more information on Ann’s Place, click here.

The State Bond Commission agenda states that the bond is slated to be passed at their next meeting on June 4 at 10:30am in room 1E of the Legislative Office Building. Although the agenda is subject to change, traditionally all items appearing on the agenda will be passed. The function of the Bond Commission is to determine whether it is in the state’s best interest to approve project funding requests and approve the amount and timing of bond sales as requested by the State Treasurer. Bethel Education Foundation’s 2nd Annual Summer Kickoff Jame Packed With FUN!

Join us for our 2nd Annual Family Summer Kickoff event. It will be held on the last day of school — Thursday, June 14th from 2PM-6PM on the Bethel Middle School Grounds (rain or shine). Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and the whole family! Games for children of all ages, sports games and activities, bounce house, dunk tank, music, food and much more! Cost: $5/person or $20/family in advance. At the door cost: $7/person or $25/family. Ticket order forms will be distributed in elementary schools or you can download the form. Food will be available for purchase including hamburgers, hotdogs, pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, chips, and beverages.

Red Cross Offers Tips to Raise Awareness for “National Hurricane Preparedness Week” May 27 through June 2

FARMINGTON, CONN., May 29, 2012 — It’s National Hurricane Preparedness Week and the American Red Cross reminds Connecticut residents that hurricanes and tropical storms can impact our communities. Residents should get prepared now. Hurricane season begins June 1 and ends on November 30.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts a near-normal year for hurricanes with nine to 15 storms in the Atlantic Ocean. Of these storms, four to 8 could strengthen to a hurricane with winds of 74 mph or higher, with as many as three becoming major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or higher.

“Getting ready now can reduce the impact of hurricanes,” said American Red Cross spokesperson Paul Shipman. “Any one of these storms could pose a serious threat to people. Getting prepared ahead of time is the best way to be ready for any emergency or weather disaster.”

WHAT TO DO The Red Cross offers steps to get ready for hurricane season. These steps include:

• Build an emergency kit with a gallon of water per person, per day, non-perishable food, a flashlight, battery-powered radio, first aid kit, medications, supplies for an infant if applicable, a multi-purpose tool, personal hygiene items, copies of important papers, cell phone chargers, extra cash, blankets, maps of the area and emergency contact information. Many of these items are available through the Red Cross Store.
• Talk with household members and create an evacuation plan. Planning and practicing evacuation plan minimizes confusion and fear during the event.
• Be informed. Learn about the community’s hurricane response plan. Plan routes to local shelters, register family members with special medical needs as required and make plans for pets to be cared for.
• Because standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding, it’s important to have protection from the floods associated with hurricanes, tropical storms, heavy rains and other conditions that impact the U.S. For more information on flood insurance, please visit the National Flood Insurance Program website at www.FloodSmart.gov.
